We are proud to announce that the opening film at Stockfish 2016 will be The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Sara Gunnarsdóttir, the film’s animator, will also be a guest at the festival.
The film takes place in San Francisco around in the year 1976 and revolves around the fifteen year old Minnie who is obsessed about sex and becomes infatuated with Monroe, her mother’s boyfriend, after she sleeps with him. Minnie is interested in becoming an animator and therefore plays Sara a big role in the film as her drawings appear a lot on screen. The director, Marielle Heller, was recently nominated for a DGA-award (Directors Guild of America). The main roles are played by Kristen Wiig, Alexander Skarsgård and the young Bel Powley, who has received a lot of attention for her role.
Sara grew up in Hafnarfjörður but has lived in the US for the past years. She studied experimental animation at CalArts in California and graduated with a MFA-degree in 2012. She now lives in New York and is working on a documentary that is mostly animated.
